English language requirements for applicants

Due to the changes in the Latvian Regulations No. 846 “Regulations Regarding the Requirements, Criteria and Procedures for Admission to Study Programmes” all international applicants who have no International English proficiency certificates have an opportunity to pass Internal English language test carried out by the Academy. Test is developed based on English language proficiency testing methodology for foreign entrants approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of Latvia. These changes are in force only for 2020 Summer intake!

An applicant who applies for a study programme with English language of instruction must submit to the Admission Committee the proof of English language proficiency to start his or her studies at the Academy:

  • IELTS Academic – 5.5 or Level B2 (minimum 5.5 in all sub scores); TOEFL iBT – 75 (minimum 18 in all sub scores); TOEFL PBT – 540; TOEL CBT – 205; Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE) – 160; Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE); Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).
  • Applicants whose English proficiency is at level B1 have to participate in the English Language International Foundation Programme of 160 academic hours.
  • Applicants whose English proficiency is at level A2 have to participate in the International Foundation Programme of 60 ECTS.
  • Applicants who have no above-menoned international certificates at the required level, but have completed basic/secondary/vocational/higher education in English or have studied in English as full-me students at least one year in the countries with English as one of the official languages do not have to cerfy English language proficiency.

The Academy recognises the following English language proficiency tests and scores:

English language proficiency test carried out by the Academy for the International Foundation Programme  A2 or B1 level For both: test and interview Results of the test are valid for one year.

You can take an on-line test exam during COVID-19 to receive the official proof of your English language proficiency at B2 level:

IELTS Indicator – an online test that can be taken from the comfort and safety of your home. The test includes four skills – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, and you will receive an indicative score for each. IELTS examiners will mark your performance and you will receive your result within seven days.

The Academic test is available for a limited time while IELTS testing is currently suspended due to COVID-19. Educational providers can use IELTS Indicator to help them gauge the English language ability of future students while IELTS testing is suspended.

IELTS Indicator is an Academic test only and has not been developed for immigration purposes.

The minimum required scores is the same as for the IELTS Academic test – 5.5 or Level B2 and every part should be at least 5.5.

Conveniently offered weekly at authorized test centres near you, the computer-delivered TOEFL iBT test is the only test that measures all 4 academic English skills — reading, listening, speaking, and writing — the way they are actually used in a classroom. So your TOEFL scores provide a true reflection of your abilities and show admission officers you have what it takes to be great.

The minimum required scores for TOEFL iBT is 75 and every part of the test should be at least 18 points for your application.

Applicants who have no above-mentioned international English proficiency certificates at the required level, but have completed basic/secondary/vocational/higher education in English or have studied in English as full-time student at least one year in countries with English as one of the official languages has no need to certify English language proficiency. In this case, the chair of the Admission Committee re-assesses and replaces the result of the English language grade of the previous higher education level of studies. The grade of the previous higher education level of studies must be at least “good”.

The requirements of English language proficiency for ERASMUS+ programme participants, exchange or visiting students are similar to the language proficiency requirements for full-time applicants who apply for studies.

The applicants whose English language proficiency is at B1 level must participate in the International Foundation Programme of 30 ECTS.

The applicants whose English language proficiency is at A2 level must participate in the International Foundation Programme of 60 ECTS.

The cost of the English language proficiency test carried out by the Academy is included into the registration and tuition fees of the International Foundation Programme.

The tuition fee of the International Foundation Programme is:

  • 1250 EUR – 6 months’ programme for A2 level of 60 ECTS

or

  • 1100 EUR – 3 months’ programme for B1 level of 30 ECTS (90 days, 160 academic hours)

The dates depend on the amount of applicants, so do not forget to check information in BIA Admission Committee.

Please, check your Internet connection and prepare your ID documents, as well as make your registration for the test at least one day prior to the test.

Please, let us know about cancellation of registration at least one day prior to the test.

You can make a self-assessment of English language proficiency using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

An international applicant who would like to apply for studies based on the Internal English proficiency test results must transfer the registration fee for Internal Entrance English Proficiency test and processing admission documents to the official Academy’s account:

Please, pay attention that this registration fee includes both Internal Entrance English Proficiency test and processing of admission documents, so it can be used twice. Do not throw this payment confirmation and save its copy.

An international applicant must submit a copy of the registration fee payment and a copy of passport or a personal identity document (identity card) to our Admission Committee by email: uk@bsa.edu.lv. The applicant receives an access to the Academy’s Moodle system and the link for the confirmation of the registration in the Moodle system from the Admission committee based on the full set of provided documentation.

The dates of the Internal Entrance English Proficiency test will be available in the schedule of test after your registration in the Moodle system. Pay your attention that the dates of the Internal Entrance English Proficiency test are different from the dates of the English language proficiency test for the International Foundation Programme that are mentioned above!

On the day of the test, the international applicant must enter the Moodle system, connect to the Big Blue Button (please, check your Internet connection, prepare the ID documents, switch on the camera and share a screen).

The examiner will open access to the test and to the test tasks. The test tasks will be opened in order of the test completion. Each part of the test has a certain time for the tasks completion.

The Speaking Part pf the test is conducted after the completion of the previous parts of the test.

An international applicant is allowed to take the next test only if the previous one test has been passed.

The Academy informs an international applicant about test results within one week from the date of the test.

The Academy admits international applicants whose points in these tests are at least 51 for every test separately.
