Purpose of the programme

Prepare highly qualified specialists with Ph.D. degree for work in the world, European and Latvian labor market with the competence to systematize and analyze the formation, development and interaction of economic and social problems, evaluate the processes taking place in the national economy, identify the economic and social problems of the country, analyze the modern challenges in economic and social life

Career opportunities

We prepare highly qualified economists with Ph.D. degree that can assess the economic situation in the country, provide recommendations to the government and company managers for solving problem situations, as well as predict macroeconomic development trends and implement economic policies in different regions

Programme content

Theoretical course 33 CP, Research work, including scientific discussions and seminars 147 CP

Part A: theoretical courses of the branch (compulsory part) 86%

Part B: mandatory elective part 14%

  • Methodology and philosophy of scientific knowledge (5 CP);
  • Regional social and economic development factors and competitiveness (5 CP);
  • Economic and globalization problems of the national economy (5 CP);
  • Higher education pedagogy and psychology (3 CP);
  • Professional English (6 CP);
  • Qualitative and quantitative methods of research in regional economy and business (5 CP);
  • Economic policy: marketing of regions and innovative development (specialization elective course 5 CP);
  • Financial systems in the national and regional economy (specialization elective course 5 CP);
  • Academic writing (2 CP)

During the studies, two scientific research seminars are planned in the format of a "round table" discussion: "Scientific novelty and relevance of the doctoral thesis" and "Current economic issues - political and economic challenges in the business environment".
