Latvian Regions and Cities

Latvia has four regions with separate history: air riga1

  • Vidzeme (Northern Latvia) – famous with its medieval castles in Cesis and Sigulda and its scenery. It is the largest region of Latvia
  • Semigallia (Southern Latvia) – famous with its baroque palaces in Rundale and Jelgava and was the centre of Courland Semigallia
  • Latgale (Eastern Latvia) – famous with its lakes, Catholic majority and unique Latgallian dialect, as well as its ceramics and Mark Rothko Museum
  • Courland (Western Latvia) – famous with its sea views, such cities as Liepaja, Ventspils, Kuldiga with the widest waterfall in the Europe, fishing villages and delicious fish dishes.
